Here is the list of 10 top freedom fighters of India:

Freedom Fighters

10. Mahatma Gandhi:
Freedom Fighters
Many people might criticize us for placing Mahatma Gandhi on the 10th spot. First of all, this list is not a ranking list. It was the collective contribution of all the freedom fighters that we are free today. The father of nation is the most celebrated freedom fighter. Secondly there are some controversies around his personal life that divide people’s opinion on him. Albeit we do not overlook his contribution to Indian independence and he surely is one of the greatest freedom fighters of India.
9. Mangal Pandey:
Freedom Fighters
India’s first struggle Independence would never have happened in 1857, if it was not the courageous Mangal pandey who rebelled against the British Empire. Mangal pandey joined the East India Company as a sepoy in 1849. He started rebellion on 29th march 1857 in Barrackpore when he learned that the bullet cartridge in their rifles is greased with cow and pig fat. As meat of both Cow and Pigs is prohibited in Hinduism and Islam respectively so it brought out a religious outburst among the sepoys at Barrackpore. Mangal Pandey was caught and hanged on 9 April 1857 but his martyrdom further fuelled India’s struggle for independence.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad was a noble man. Many people remember him as the first president of Free India but he was also one of the greatest freedom fighters of India. He was motivated by Mahatma Gandhi for India’s Independence. He advocated use of Indian products and believed in Indian Education system. Lal Bahadur Shashtri was born on 2 October 1904. Shashtri ji lived such honourable and inspirational life that it set example for every other person in our country. Like Prasad, He too was influenced by Gandhiji and then by Nehru. Shashtri ji contributed to the satyagraha movement and is one of the most respected freedom fighters of India. Shashtri ji become second prime minister of India in 1964. He gave the famous slogan of Jai Jawan Jai Kisan. India suffered a great loss when he died in 1966. Many believe that Shashtri ji was killed.
6. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel:
Freedom Fighters
The India that we see today is because of Patel. This is not exaggeration but a true fact. Vallabhbhai Patel is one of the most loved freedom fighters of the country. Many people believe that if he had become the first prime minister of country instead of Nehru then our country would have been far more developed. Patel surely knew how to influence people as he brought together 565 different princely states of India. India would have never been a united nation from north to south and east to west if it was not the efforts of Patel. The Kashmir issue that is a major problem between India and Pakistan would have not existed if Patel’s advised had been followed by Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru.
5. Ashfaqulla Khan:
Freedom Fighters
Hindus and Muslim were inseparable before independence. It is a saddening fact that our politician today can easily charge these two communities against each other. But back in the day, the British has to conspire a huge event to start a riot between these two brotherly communities. Ashfaqulla Khan, the most reputed Muslim freedom fighter, proved that Hindus and muslim can live in peace and their only enemy was britishers. Khan was best friend with Ram Prasad Bismil. The two were devoted to their religions but they stood united for one cause – India’s freedom. Together they planned the Kakori conspiracy. They both were caught and hanged to death by British government on the same day – 19 December 1927.

Freedom Fighters
If you talk about female freedom fighters of India then the most famous among them is probably Lakshmi bai of Jhansi. For those who don’t know she was born on 19 November 1828 and was the queen of Jhansi (India). The famous fight fought between British army and Rani Lakshmi Bai has been portrayed in movies, plays and in literature. It is a very inspiring story and I urge you to read it as it depicts how a brave woman fought a whole army of Britain and martyred for her nation.
3. Subash Chandra Bose:
Freedom Fighters
Although many people criticize Subhas’s involvement with the Nazi army and Hitler but one fact that can not be denied is that he was one of the greatest Indian freedom fighter. His only purpose was to free india and for this he was taking every step possible. He formed the Azad hind fauj(army) joined by thousands of Indians. Subhas Chandra bose went missing in 1945 (as his plane crashed) but conspiracy theorist believes that he lived for next 30 to 40 years.
2. Chandrashekhar Azad:
Freedom Fighters
Azad in English means Freedom. He proved his name to a fact as he lived free and died free. If it was not because of his double crossing friend Azad would have surely freed India in the 1930s itself. Azad shot himself in Alfred Park (Now Chandra Shekhar Azad Park) when he was surrounded by british soldiers. He never wanted to be caught alive. So he considered better to kill himself then to be killed by a British bullet. He was just 24 years old at that time (1931).
1. Bhagat Singh:
Freedom Fighters
Bhagat singh is today role model of millions of Indians. He is arguably the greatest freedom fighter of India. This is because he never believed in the slow policies of Gandhiji. He believed in action and he believed that British will never free India until Indian youth actively participate in it. One should read Bhagat singh’s biography and learn from it. Believe it or not but the legacy Bhgat singh left is way much larger than Mahatma Gandhi.

These are the 10 greatest freedom fighters of India. But in the end the true fact is that India got independence due to the sacrifices of millions of freedom fighters. We salute all those heroes.
